The constant interest in nitroimidazoles was originally caused by the discovery of the naturally occurring antibiotic Azomycin (2-nitroimidazole).Concerning their activity against pathogenic microorganisms, several investigations towards structure-activity relationships of this substance class were accomplished and led to 1-aikylated 4- and 5-nitroimidazoles, which showed the 5-nitrocompounds were more effective than their 4-nitro isomers.The screening of several substitution patterns of the nitroimidazoles elicited Metronidazole and Ornidazole
